How can a women’s Health trained Osteopath help?

As Osteopaths, we take a holistic approach to pelvic health. We are trained to look at your WHOLE body, not just your pelvic floor or specific site of discomfort. We work with you to discover the root cause of your issue and then create a specific treatment plan to not only decrease your symptoms but address the underlying maintaining factors.

A pelvic health Osteopath will focus on…..

History - Your first session will involved an in depth conversation about your medical history and history of your issue. It is a chance for us to understand you better and start forming an idea of what may be the specific issue. We will also make sure you understand what will happen during the consult and the in’s and out’s of what osteopathy in the pelvic health space involves.

Hands-on Diagnosis - We then begin a thorough whole-body assessment. This may involve range of motion testing, muscle testing, orthopaedic tests and neurological testing. This helps us form our working diagnosis. As we go, everything will be explained to you. We encourage questions too! The more you know about your body, the more control you have over your health. At this stage a conversation about whether or not an internal examination is recommended will occur. There will be plenty of time for questions and opportunities to discuss your options. Internal exams are never compulsory and the most important thing is you feel comfortable. In most cases internal examination will only be performed in a subsequent appointment after your initial consultation.

Treatment - We will then work together to create a hands-on treatment plan tailored to your specific problem. This may involve muscle stretching, soft tissue release techniques, adjustments and ligamentous balancing. We utilise many kinds of techniques. It’s important you are as comfortable as possible and we will happily ensure we find an approach the best suits you whilst gaining the best results. Our pelvic health osteopath is trained in the use of both internal and external assessment and treatment options for the pelvic floor.

Education and Exercise - We have a big focus on education at Caldera. It’s important to us that you understand what is happening in your body so you feel empowered to take control of your health. We also may prescribe at-home exercise programs and lifestyle modifications so you can continue to improve between visits. Our pelvic health osteopath Teleah is trained in Pilates and Kinetic Link Training with a specific focus on Pelvic Floor rehabilitation.

What does a Women’s health appointment involve?

Your appointment will begin with some questions about the history of your current concern and your medical history. Learning about you and your lifestyle is important to start building a holistic picture of what may be creating dysfunction within your body.

Once we have taken your history, we will then begin with hands-on diagnosis of what may be causing your ailment. Osteopaths use a series of range of motion testing, neurological and orthopaedic testing where appropriate. We believe structure and function are interrelated. When assessing your pelvic health concerns, we don't solely focus on the pelvic floor. We also do a whole body assessment to see what else could be impacting your pelvic floor health.  As we go, everything will be explained to you, so you have a good idea of what is happening in your body. We encourage questions too! The more you know about your body, the more control you have over your health.

From our diagnosis, your osteopath will discuss with your what your treatment options are. Both internal and external techniques will be described and then it will be your choice of what you feel most comfortable with. Our aim will always be to ensure you are as at ease as possible whilst gaining the most amount of benefit from the treatment. Please know there are many options that don’t involve internal techniques that still can gain good results. Part of the treatment will also involve exercise-based rehabilitation. This may include breathing retraining and tips, pelvic floor relaxation techniques, pelvic floor strengthening exercises or deep core/full body rehabilitation exercises.

Endometriosis Management in Murwillumbah

Chronic pelvic pain, such as Endometriosis can be debilitating and symptoms vary from person to person. In many cases, it  has a huge impact on daily life. Endometriosis can develop in many places within the body, more commonly around the uterus, ovaries, uterine tubes, pelvic fascia, bowel and bladder. It can create adhesions, leading to pain and other musculoskeletal tension.

Even after management such as laparoscopies or hormone therapy, some people will still experience painful symptoms associated with Endometriosis. Developing a self-management toolbox that is specific to you is very important. This includes factors such as good sleeping habits, movement, diet, education, treatment modalities and psychosocial support.

How can Osteopathy help Endometriosis?

As osteopaths we look at the whole person; body, mind and spirit. We consider biological factors, psychological factors and social factors that could be contributing to chronic pelvic pain associated with Endometriosis.

Improve lymphatic drainage and venous return  - The lymphatic system has multiple functions, playing a major role in immune health as well as regulating tissue fluid balance. Through osteopathic techniques, we can help improve the drainage of the lymphatic system to help decrease inflammation in the pelvic region.

Mobilisation of pelvic viscera (organs) and fascia  - The scarring and adhesions associated with Endo can create tension in the pelvic fasica which may affect adjacent areas such as the gastrointestinal tract, rectum and bladder. Using visceral (organ) techniques and advanced palpation skills, osteopaths aim to improve the fascial glide of these tissues, improving their overall structure and function.

Nervous system support  - Supporting your nervous system with breathing pattern corrections, sleep tips and Endo education can help to down regulate sensitivity within the nervous system, aiming to decrease overall perception of pain.

Supporting bones and ligaments  - The pelvis as a structure is involved in many daily activities; sitting, standing, walking, doing a wee, passing a bowel motion. It houses important nerves, arteries, lymphatic structures, organs, muscles, bones, fascia and ligaments. As osteopaths we look at the mechanics of the whole body and how they may be altered by pelvic pain. Nervous sensitivity, pain postures and pelvic tension affect the whole body. We address any mechanical imbalances and teach you ways to strengthen or relax certain areas, depending on what your specific presentation needs.

At home tools for managing flare-ups - Finding tools that work for you is paramount for managing Endometriosis. For some, managing this condition may be a long term thing, so finding what works and what doesn't for your particular body is important.  We can help you with that!

We are here to help support you through your Endometriosis journey. We believe health care should be delivered holistically and love to work with the rest of your healthcare team to provide the best possible solutions tailored to your specific needs.
